Inspired by a recent read, the back-to-school season, and the return of Robert Langdo
n, I’ve got a mystery, a thriller, and a historical mystery that all have a professor as a main character. There are different time periods, areas of education, and two are murder mysteries, while one is a revenge thriller! Bonus: you don’t have to worry about any grading or being on time, just enjoy reading and sleuthing!
For fans of university settings, murder mysteries, and amateur sleuths!
Daphne Ouverture is a history professor at Harrison University and loves her job, but is stressed because that’s the reality of working in academia. It also doesn’t help that some colleagues keep mixing her up with the sociologist of medicine—and that’s before a fellow professor, Sam Taylor, is murdered! At first, Daphne isn’t jumping to solve murders—especially for a colleague she wasn’t enamored by. But Sam did send her a strange text right before he died, so when it appears that whatever the killer was after Sam for is now believed to be held by Daphne, she’s spurred into sleuthing!
The balance of adding in historical tidbits that were interesting and didn’t detract from the plot kept me extra engaged, and I adored Daphne’s relationship with her family and best friend! The audiobook has a lovely narrator, Jasmine Walker, who also narrates the cozy food

This one is university set, with a dual POV, and vigilante thrillers!
We follow two women at Gorman University. First up is an English professor who is unlike any English professor you’ve ever had: Scarlett Clark picks the worst man on campus (think predator) every single year and literally kills him, making it look like an accident or suicide. She’s also dealing with her personal life, the bureaucracy of working in academia, and trying to keep her murders a secret—she’s gotten too close to being found out before, and there’s a detective sniffing around now.
Then there is freshman student Carly Schiller, who is finally away from her oppressive father but totally unsure of who she is while she tries to navigate the school, college campus life, and being a young adult. It helps that her roommate is self-assured and popular, but when she’s assaulted, Carly is forced into the role of protector and must find her voice… Audiobook listeners get the bonus of dual narrators: Lameece Issaq & Eileen Stevens |
For fans of historical mysteries and doctors assisting detectives in an investigation!
Set in 1875 Philadelphia, Dr. Lydia Weston is both a professor at Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania and a practicing physician at Spruce Street Clinic. When one of her patients, housemaid Anna Ward, is found dead in the Schuylkill River, Lydia teams up with the police. Turns out the family that Ann worked for has no interest in assisting the investigators in finding her killer, so this will involve quite a bit of sleuthing… I love when medically focused mysteries are written by real-life doctors!
The audiobook is narrated by Gabra Zackman, who you may know from (if not, I also recommend) Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposter Behind the World’s Most Notorious Diaries! |
